On this webinar, the GRIST team unpacked which conversation behaviours will have the most impact on your customers, what behaviours to celebrate and what you can take back to your team to action better customer experience today. James Clear ‘Atomic Habits’ event: Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland
Over three days of speaking events in Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney, the GRIST team hosted some of our clients at James Clear’s Atomic Habits tour. The principles of Atomic Habits closely align with our micro-behavioural approach, and we saw this as a fantastic opportunity to get a more in-depth understanding of Clear’s methodologies and open discussion with our partners on how we can all use the principles of habit formation when we’re design behavioural change interventions across an organisation.

In the last post, we explored one of the common root causes of a mindset issue and how you can coach to it. This post is looking at another common mindset issue: unhelpful beliefs.
How do you know when to coach to mindset, and how do you do it?
As a leader, you know when you’re asking someone to do something differently there are always going to be two things to coach to: skill and will. Coaching to increase capability is something most leaders are comfortable with, but coaching to ‘will’ or ‘mindset’ is harder.

When it comes to performance, mindset is absolutely crucial. Ultimately, how a person thinks determines what it is that they do, and what they do or don’t do determines the results that they get.

The ACDC coaching model is a powerful tool for driving rapid behavioral change. Unlike the GROW model, ACDC focuses on specific micro-behaviors that can be easily implemented and provide immediate results. It emphasises simplicity, speed, practice, and accountability, leading to impactful and transformative change. By targeting small, actionable steps, ACDC enables leaders to drive quick and effective changes within their teams, as demonstrated by Sarah's experience in improving communication within her team.
What the ‘Life. Be In It.’ campaign can teach you about large-scale behaviour change
The 'Life. Be In It.' campaign teaches us that small, simple steps can lead to significant behavior change. Applying insights from large-scale behavior change to individual settings can be done through behavioral coaching, like the ACDC model, which focuses on immediate improvements and frequent, targeted actions.
Bringing back-office coaching front of mind
We recently caught up with Jing Chang, Head of the 4 person Concessions Deed Management team at VicRoads who has successfully used the GRIST ACDC Tactical Leadership model to drive behavioural change, enhance productivity, and foster team engagement in her new leadership role.
We explored how coaching could be applied to any team seeking to improve, change, or enhance performance, specifically back-office teams facing unique challenges.
Back-office teams often struggle to coach behaviourally, it's not something that comes naturally to teams that don't have a customer as a reference point. There are often multiple roles in these teams performing very different tasks.
So how do you navigate what to focus on and how to coach these sorts of teams?
